Johnstown Symphony Orchestra
The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra (JSO) was founded in 1929 by a small group of local musicians who organized an ensemble in the face of the Great Depression. Supported by the Johnstown Recreation Commission and the surrounding communities, the JSO developed into a strong community orchestra despite small budgets and the onset of World War II. During the 31 year tenure of former Music Director Istvan Jaray the JSO grew to become a regionally known metropolitan orchestra. The JSO’s current Music Director James Blachly is a conductor dedicated to artistic excellence and broader accessibility. In addition to the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra he currently serves as Music Director of the Experiential Orchestra and Music Director of Geneva Light Opera. The JSO performs at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
